After living aboard for 1.5 years of fantastic family adventures through the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic and exploring the Caribbean it is time for us to return to land life and our jobs. We were very particular on the boat we took our children across an ocean on and have been very happy with our choice. Our main criteria was a strong seaworthy boat that was comfortable to live on for years and had reliable recent equipment. We have been completely through the boat during our ownership preparing and equipping her for our trip and maintaining her so that we would be happy to sail across oceans with our children. See extensive list in details at bottom of this page. She represents a bargain at **EUR 135,000 (approx. USD 160,000) EUR 130,000 (approx USD 155,000)** with this specification and is ready to go again. We are currently enjoying Grenada for the hurricane season. A great location to start your adventure with the easy sailing in the iconic Caribbean. We can help with delivery if needed. Boat is EU VAT paid so makes travel in Europe easier. (***See note on VAT at bottom***)

Drakkar is from 1987 when boats were built strong before production and price pressures started to squeeze layup specifications. All systems and equipment have been modernized for the best of both worlds. She is 46 feet / 14 metres long giving extra waterline length for higher average speeds, easier motion on the waves and excellent living volumes. Our top speed is 20.4 knots surfing Atlantic rollers on our lovely crossing. It is always fun sailing comfortably faster than the other guy, it cuts days off an ocean crossing and makes required weather windows smaller for coastal trips.

***Yes she is an older boat, but consider the advantages and total cost of ownership.

  • Purchase price is modest.
  • Refit has already been done. New rigging, watermaker, engines, feathering props, new navigation suite, new life raft, new parachute sea anchor, drogue and custom line, asymmetric spinnaker etc etc…
  • Maintenance is low with modern simple comfortable systems already set up for living on board and offshore sailing. Independent of shore power and generators using solar only. No complex old systems to maintain.
  • Depreciation has already happened so resale price similar to purchase price.
  • Great waterline length for more comfortable motion at sea and higher average speeds. Both good safety factors with less fatigue and risk of poor crew decisions and faster passage time so less exposure to changing conditions.

Compare this total cost to later model boats that are still going down the depreciation curve, shorter waterline length, slower sailing, less equipment and equipment coming to end of life with refits needed.

We would rather be out sailing and enjoying ourselves on Drakkar.***

Exterior aft stb

Four double cabins and two heads has been an ideal layout. Everyone including our guests have had plenty of space, even with four adults and four kids on board! Two heads are better than four as you get reasonable sized heads and half as many through hulls and plumbing issues.

Motors are recent enthusiastically sized Volvo 55hp with 1,500 hours and run like clockwork. We have not touched the extensive and expensive Volvo Penta OEM spares we bought other than routine maintenance. Motoring cruise speed on one engine is 6 knots at 1,700rpm using average 2.7 l/hr helped by her feathering J-Props. We have done 11.2 knots at wide open throttle with both engines! Great to have such reserves of efficient reliable power and their 115 Amp alternators.

She is set up to be self-sufficient with 600 litres of water and 360 litres diesel capacity. The solar panels will run the water maker, cover all loads including fridge and inverter and still be charging the batteries. It’s great seeing the amps going in on the digital battery monitor even when making water.

We love our boat and have been very happy with her. The forward cabins particularly are very spacious which is important when I am height challenged at 6’4” / 196cm! The coherent design of this boat has been much appreciated. Other boats have things like outboard helm stations which are fun for the first hour before you are baked in the tropical sun or blown off in the rain squall while you can’t see the other side of the boat in the tight reef anchorage. Our helm station is well sheltered with excellent visibility and communication with the rest of the boat, not an ejector seat several stories high. Her engines are behind a watertight bulkhead for safety and noise control. The bows are huge watertight compartments with massive storage volume for light gear. The 15hp outboard is lovely and quiet and efficient. And will get the dinghy on the plane with two adults, two kids and lots of shopping which is great when you want to anchor in the lovely bay but get provisions in the town a distance away or explore that snorkelling spot. We brought the parachute sea anchor and drogue from Coppins Sea Anchors in New Zealand to give options if caught at sea by a storm the Iridium GO satellite communications was not able to route you around. Why all the way from New Zealand? Because they make them for the fishing fleet working the Southern Ocean and boisterous Tasman Sea.

I could rave on for ages about the boat, equipment and reasons behind the choices but it’s probably time for some more pictures.

We consider good bridgedeck clearance an important characteristic.

The aft deck has been a surprisingly useful space. Great dinghy parking spot and large extra living area keeping the wet kids water play out of the cockpit. Even with the dinghy on board there’s enough space to process a decent sized Mahi Mahi. This one fed four adults and two kids for three good meals on our crossing. Expression says it all really.

Sun and rain covers in one of the many different tunes. The clears and covers can be arranged in many permutations depending on the weather conditions greatly enhancing comfort on board. Here the side covers are raised to scoop cooling wind into the cockpit. Forward shade allows saloon windows to remain open in rain and keeps morning sun off here in the trade winds.

Good comparison of the boats size even though she is at an angle compared to the F&P Orana 44. I like how she dwarfs the Lagoon 380 behind us.

Many happy hours lounging on the forward trampolines.

Exterior foredeck port

View to port from the helm station. Here we are chasing the sunset on the Atlantic crossing loving how stable the symmetrical spinnaker is from the cat. No need to touch the sheets or helm all day.
